Instructions to Authors

ARTICLE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Authors are encouraged to email their papers of the topic they propose to submit to jhwang@mtu.edu   We prefer that authors send their papers by e-mail (or a diskette) compressed with Winzip to expedite publication and ensure accuracy.

The proposed articles must be original research or industrial experience and are assumed to be submitted to The Journal of Minerals and Materials Characterization and Engineering on an exclusive basis.

Let us know of any Potential Reviewers: Please provide the names, job titles, affiliations, complete addresses, telephone numbers and fax numbers, and, where possible, email addresses of three potential reviewers for the manuscript.

Format:
Please send one paper copy of the manuscript. A diskette (3 1/2") should be provided when first submitted and for revisions upon acceptance and revision.

    Address:
      Jim Hwang
      Institute of Materials Processing
      Michigan Technological University
      Minerals and Materials Building
      1400 Townsend Drive
      Houghton, MI 49931
      Telephone:
      Phone: 906/487-2600
      Fax: 906/487-2921
      e-mail: jhwang@mtu.edu

Software
Articles should be written in Microsoft Word or WordPerfect; other word processor files will not be accepted. Please label the diskette as either IBM or Macintosh version and software used.

Hardcopy
The entire manuscript must be typed double-spaced, single column, including title page, text, references, footnotes, figure legends and tables. Copies must be of good dark type and good contrast for any images using a clearly legible duplication process.

Pagination
All pages should be numbered consecutively; starting with the title page and including pages containing tables and figure legends.

Title page, abstract page, references and figure legends should be on separate pages. Tables, figures, and furnished art should be grouped together at the end of the manuscript to facilitate processing.

Type faces and fonts
Times Roman is the preferred typeface for printouts of manuscripts. Particular care should be used in preparing manuscripts involving equations, formulas, symbol texts, mathematical expressions. Italic or boldface type should be clearly indicated, and Greek or unusual characters should be written plainly or explained by annotations.

Content

Abstract
All manuscripts should be accompanied by an abstract not to exceed 200 words as well as a list of key words or terms (for indexing) which the author should supply. Three to six keywords or terms not in the title will assist indexers in cross-indexing your article. The keywords or terms should follow the abstract.

Title Page
The title page should include the title, author's names, e-mail addresses and street or P.O. box addresses, phone and fax numbers.

Text
Authors should write in clear, concise English. The responsibility for all aspects of the manuscript preparation rests with the authors. The Editors will not undertake extensive changes or rewriting of the manuscript. Major headings should be all caps be same size as text in boldface and sub-heads should be same size as text in boldface.

References
References should be numbered in square brackets as they are introduced in text. In listing of multiple authors (more than three), et al. should be used after following the first author. The reference list should follow the text and begin on a separate page, be double-spaced, and alphabetized. Multiple references by one author or group of authors should be placed in chronological order: Use small letters (1988a, 1988b) for references published in the same year. Journal titles should be abbreviated according to the Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index, 1985.

Examples of both text usage and reference listing are as follows:

    Examples of Reference Styles

      A. Journal articles:
      Appears In Text as: [1]
      Appears in References as: [1] Xu, Z., Cornilsen, B. C., Popko, D. C., Pennington, W. D., Wood, J. R., and Hwang, J. Y., 2001, “Quantitative Mineral Analysis by FTIR Spectroscopy.” J. Vibrational Spectroscopy, Vol. 5, Ed. 1, No. 4, pp. 1-11.

      B. Document:
      Appears in Text as: [2]
Appears in References as: [2] Gertsch, R. and Bullock, R. L., editors, 1998, Techniques in Underground Mining, Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Littleton, Colorado.

      C. Chapter in an edited book:
      Appears in Text as: [3]
Appears in References as: [3] Helleiner, O., 1967, The population changes of Europe from the Black Death, In: The Cambridge Economic History of Europe, Volume 4, pp. 1-200, (Rich, E.E. and Wilson, C.H., Eds.), London and New York, Cambridge Univ. Press.

Tables
Tables should be grouped at the end of the manuscript on separate sheets. The table should be designed for efficient use of space and ease of reading. Column heads can use abbreviations.

Figures and Graphs
Figures should be numbered in the order as they appear in manuscript. It is recommended that authors' names be printed on the back. The figure captions should be typed double-spaced on a separate sheet. Both figures and captions should be grouped at the end of the manuscript.

Figures and graphs may be submitted as line drawings of high quality contrast on plain paper suitable for scanning. However, authors are encouraged to provide the scanned images in a format such as "TIF" or "JPG" image formats.

Authors will complete and submit a copyright form for the IJPM. Authors are also responsible for obtaining permission to use previously published material. Permission must be obtained from the original copyright owner, which in most cases is the publisher.

Formulas and Equations
Empirical and structural formulas and mathematical and chemical equations should have 2 blank lines before and after and should not be congested or too small in symbols or text. Subscripts and superscripts should be clearly discerned---offset and a smaller type size---exponents should be set up in a single line. Signs such as + - = < > should be spaced, but the components of mathematical products should not be spaced.

For computer software, formula font incompatibility between computer platforms and software brands can present problems. If formulas are produced using the equation programming for Microsoft Word or Corel Wordperfect, as specified, these potential problems will be avoided.
