- The system is a model 2M Melt-Spinner manufactured by Marko Materials.
- The vacuum chamber is 22" in diameter and 40" long with one ribbon
connection chute 10" in diameter and 48" long.
- The casting wheel is made of copper-berillium alloy and is 12" in
diameter and 1½" thick. It is driven with a 2 HP motor at speeds up to
3400 RPM.
- The system has a roughing pump and a 6" diffusion pump. It is also
configured with an argon pressurizing valve and a vent valve. Typically
melt spinning is done in partial pressure of argon.
- Crucible size should be a maximum of 1½" diameter and 10" length.
- Induction heating is done with an Inductotherm VIP Power-Trak.
- The ribbon produced may be ground into powder with the 2M-Ribbon
Pulverizer. Typically, five to 10 pounds of ribbons can be pulverized in
twenty-five to thirty-five minutes of operation.
- Both the melt-spinner and the pulverizer can be configured with an
inert atmosphere glove box. This allows for inert processing of reactive
materials.
