General

The TMS Fall Extraction and Processing Division Meeting in 2002 will be organised in Luleć, Sweden, jointly between TMS, MiMeR (Minerals and Metals Recycling Research Centre) at Luleć University of Technology and MEFOS, The Foundation for Metallurgical Research. The topic of the meeting will be "Recycling and Waste Treatment in Metal and Mineral Processes: Technical and Economic Aspects". The conference will be held during 16-20 June 2002 at the Nordkalotten Hotel Conference Incentive in Luleć, Sweden.

Recycling and waste treatment is a growing area in material production as new material produced from recycled material can be produced with much lower energy consumption and lower emissions to the environment. In addition, recycling contributes to the saving of the earth's limited resources. Metals can, at least in theory, be recycled indefinitely and valuable metals, as well as metals available in large quantities, have for a long time been recycled. The share of steel produced from scrap is in many countries approaching or exceeding 50% of the total production. However, on the way from the raw material (scrap or ore) to the final recycling of consumer goods, wastes with limited possibilities for recycling are produced. Products with unfavourable combinations of materials are constructed. Corrosion and wear of the products give rise to material flows, which are not easily recovered. As on the same time the amount of produced materials is steadily increasing, the need to solve the materials recycling issues is crucial for a sustainable development.

The present meeting is focusing on practical, economic and fundamental aspects of recycling and waste treatment. Recycling and waste treatment is furthermore an area where most companies and researchers realise the need to co-operate internationally in order to find the best solutions from economic, technical and environmental concern. Therefore, recycling and waste treatment is a theme very well suited for international conferences.

Papers are sought within Recycling and Waste Treatment in Metal and Mineral Processes: Technical and Economic Aspects. Typical subtopics might include:

Aluminium Recycling
Process Fundamentals as Related to Recycling
Cost Benefit of Recycling
Process Mineralogy
Persistent Organic Pollutants Issues in Metal Recycling Processes
Product Design for Recycling
Economic Aspects of Recycling
Rare Metal Recycling
Ferrous Metal Recycling
Recycling of Electric and Electronic Products
Light Weight Metal Recycling
Recycling of Mineral Processing/Mining Wastes
Materials Recycling: General
Recycling and Waste Treatment Strategies due to Legislation, Impurity Accumulation, Health and Safety
Mercury Containing Waste
Slag Processing and Utilisation
Non-Ferrous Metal Recycling
Treatment and Recycling of Aqueous Effluent Streams
Opportunities for Secondary Materials in Primary Smelters
Waste Processing and Utilisation
Physical Separation of Waste Materials
Waste Processing for the Recovery of Secondary Fuels
Processing of Contaminated Soils

The Nordkalotten Hotel Conference Incentive in Luleć will provide an ideal location for the conference. With its beautiful surroundings, Nordkalotten Hotel Conference Incentive offers good opportunities for discussions and usually at this time of the year good weather and a chance to enjoy the midnight sun.

As organisers of this meeting, MiMeR, Luleć University of Technology and MEFOS would like to express their sincere gratitude to TMS and the Extraction and Processing Division for giving us this opportunity to arrange this meeting. We would also like to thank all the people that already have volunteered to serve as members of the IOC.
