RESEARCH

Develop, manage and conduct sponsored programs in processing, shapemaking and mechanical alloying of engineered materials, including:

•    Developing a mechanically alloyed precursor material for superconducting wires, scaling up production to kilogram quantities and transitioning the process to one of the industrial participants.  (8-year industrial program)

•    Providing technical support for a 7-year DoD initiative in PM-based aluminum composites which reduced material cost by 50% and resulted in these composites being used in a new family of commercial aircraft engines.

•    Producing and characterizing an oxide-dispersion-strengthened superalloy for use in vehicle propulsion systems (6-year DOE-funded program)

Program sponsors include Huntington Alloys, General Motors, Caterpillar, U.S. Department of Energy, State of Michigan (Research Excellence Fund), Lockheed Martin (several divisions), Johns Hopkins University, and a number of specialty material producers.

 

TEACHING

Developed and teach undergraduate Program in Integrated, Sustainable Manufacturing (PrISM), a team-based, hands-on program teaching fundamentals of manufacturing and integrated product/process development.  (Sponsored by Society of Manufacturing Eng. and industrial partners; 1998-Present)

Teach courses in mechanical engineering (manufacturing & mechanics), general engineering (PrISM), and materials science and engineering.  (1994-present)
