Glove box facilities allow inert handling of reactive powders
A large triple box system (pictured below) provides:
01-HD attritor milling
25 T hydraulic press
Powder canning facilities
Access to a 1650°C vacuum sintering furnace
A smaller single glove box provides pulverizing and melt spinning capabilities
Melt Spinner
The system is a model 2M Melt-Spinner manufactured by Marko Materials.
The vacuum chamber is 22" in diameter and 40" long with one ribbon connection chute 10" in diameter and 48" long.
The casting wheel is made of copper-berillium alloy and is 12" in diameter and 1½" thick. It is driven with a 2 HP motor at speeds up to 3400 RPM.
The system has a roughing pump and a 6" diffusion pump. It is also configured with an argon pressurizing valve and a vent valve. Typically melt spinning is done in partial pressure of argon.
Crucible size should be a maximum of 1½" diameter and 10" length.
Induction heating is done with an Inductotherm VIP Power-Trak.
The ribbon produced may be ground into powder with the 2M-Ribbon Pulverizer. Typically, five to 10 pounds of ribbons can be pulverized in twenty-five to thirty-five minutes of operation.
Both the melt-spinner and the pulverizer can be configured with an inert atmosphere glove box. This allows for inert processing of reactive materials.
